more terrible beauty

we love decay. the sweet smell of rotting concrete and rusting iron.

a couple of months ago, we pointed to a breathtaking series of photos taken by brooklynite, mr. mott. Images of abandoned prisons, state hospitals and power stations evoked a serene and terrible beauty. we thought mr. mott couldn’t be beat.

but now we find the images of photographer shaun o’boyle and are happy to report that his stark photos of asylums, mines, fairgrounds and ancient chemistry labs are on a par. Often shot in black and white, and with an intimacy that almost makes you want to turn away, o’boyle salvages what he can from the detritus. we are grateful.
